His first print ad after doing that, he recalls, was in Grit, the folksy national weekly newspaper published in Williamsport, Pa. Then Stoller formed his mail-order company and started buying time and space. Stoller and Lane went to Volunteer State Bank in Hendersonville, Tenn., signed over their house and other property as collateral for a $200,000-plus credit line, and borrowed $100,000. He decided to take a tack he was already perfecting: taking it to ''the people.'' By then, however, he already had 5,000 copies of it printed up. Country music biographies generally don`t sell well, he was told. When he sought to sell it, publishers, distributors and TV marketing firms weren`t impressed.
